10 Questions to Ask Before Hiring an Exterior Painter in Fort Collins

Don't Skip the Vetting Process

Hiring the wrong exterior painter can cost you thousands — in peeling paint, missed prep work, or worse, damage you're stuck paying to fix yourself. In Northern Colorado, where homes face 28+ freeze-thaw cycles per year and UV radiation runs 10–15% higher than lower elevations, the stakes are even higher. A cheap job doesn't just look bad. It fails fast.

Before you sign anything, run through these 10 questions. They'll separate serious contractors from ones you'll regret hiring.

The 10 Questions to

Ask

1. Are You Licensed and Insured?

This is non-negotiable. Ask for proof of a current contractor's license and general liability insurance. The minimum you should accept is $1M in liability coverage — though reputable companies carry $2M or more. If a contractor hesitates or can't produce documentation, move on.

2. What Does Your Insurance Cover?

Liability insurance protects your property. Workers' comp protects you from being liable if a worker gets injured on your job site. Ask specifically about both. An uninsured crew on your property is a legal and financial risk you don't need.

3. Can You Provide Local References?

References from Fort Collins, Windsor, or the surrounding area matter more than generic reviews. Local references tell you the contractor knows how to work in Northern Colorado's climate — and that their work holds up after a full season of Colorado weather.

4. What Paint Brands and Products Do You Use?

Not all exterior paints are equal. For Colorado's altitude and UV exposure, you need products formulated for durability — think Sherwin-Williams Emerald or Duration, or Benjamin Moore Aura. If a contractor can't name the specific products they use or deflects with "we use quality paint," that's a red flag. Ask for the product name and the finish they recommend for your siding type.

5. What's Included in Your Prep Process?

Paint fails at the prep stage, not the paint stage. A legitimate exterior painter should be pressure washing, scraping loose paint, caulking gaps, priming bare wood, and masking windows, trim, and landscaping. If prep isn't explicitly outlined in the quote, ask what's included — and get it in writing.

6. How Many Coats Are You Applying?

The answer should be two — minimum — on most exterior surfaces. One coat is a shortcut that will show within a season. On bare wood or repaired areas, a primer coat plus two finish coats is the right call. Our exterior painting process includes proper coats and prep as the baseline, not an upsell.

7. What's Your Timeline and Crew Size?

A single painter on a full house exterior is going to take a long time — or they're rushing. Ask how many crew members will be on-site and get a realistic project timeline. Weather delays are normal in Colorado, but a vague "couple of weeks" with no concrete plan is not.

8. Do You Handle Repairs Before Painting?

Rotted fascia, cracked caulk, damaged trim — these need to be fixed before paint goes on. Ask whether minor wood repairs are included, and what the process is for larger damage they discover mid-project. A contractor who just paints over problems is setting you up for failure.

9. How Do You Handle Cleanup?

A professional crew leaves your property the way they found it — or better. Ask specifically: how is paint overspray handled, what happens to drop cloths and masking, and who hauls away debris. Landscaping protection should be part of the standard process, not something you have to request.

10. What's Your Warranty?

A quality exterior paint job should come with a workmanship warranty. Ask what's covered, how long it lasts, and what the process is if something fails. Be skeptical of contractors who offer no warranty or bury the terms in vague language.

Why These Questions Matter More in Fort Collins

The Fort Collins area throws real challenges at exterior paint — elevation-driven UV exposure, wide temperature swings, and a freeze-thaw cycle that punishes any paint system that wasn't installed correctly. Asking the right questions upfront isn't just due diligence. It's how you make sure your investment actually lasts.
